This building is part of a neighbourhood known as Schmidtville. Elizabeth Schmidt inherited a large field from her father in the South End of Halifax in the early part of the 19th Century. Following the death of her husband, Christian Schmidt in 1828, Elizabeth had the field surveyed for a subdivision that would later become known as Schmidtville.
George Fraser resided in this building between 1872 and 1880. Fraser was an accountant for Alexander Keith who later became Alderman for Ward One from 1872 to 1881 and then Mayor of Halifax from 1881 to 1884. Matthew Scanlon purchased the house in 1880 and the Scanlon-Mahoney family resided in this building for 134 years.
The building has been reimagined to feature modern building standards and comforts while maintaining its iconic Victorian design. Today, the Fraser-Mahoney house features 10 units spread across 3 storeys.
